Offshore West Africa 2012, the region’s premier conference and exhibition for the offshore oil and gas industries, took place on 24-26 January 2012 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Nigeria, with more than 800 attendees. Over the 3 days, Offshore West Africa 2012 brought together both International and West African professionals to Abuja, Nigeria to discuss the latest technological advancements, lessons learned and future projects within the deepwater industry.

On the final day of the 2012 Conference was a lively debate as part of the Regional Local Content Panel Discussion. The Panel was moderated by Mr. Ernest Nwapa, Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, and included contributions from Mr. Emeke Ene, Vice President, PETAN; Hon. Asita Honourable, Chairman, Committee on Local Content; Dr. Sammy J. Ojigbo, General Manager Operations, NNPC Oil Field Operations, and Engr. Francis Alabo Ogaree, General Manager, International Venture Operations, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The panel discussed various facets of the oil and gas market from a local and regional perspective and included an extensive question and answer session from the audience, directed to the panel members.  

Offshore West Africa 2012 was closed with the annual Offshore West Africa Awards Ceremony, presented by Mr. David Paganie, Chief Editor, Offshore magazine and Conferences Director, PennWell Corporation. The Awards provided included Best Presentation, Best Technical Presentation and Young Engineer.

The Best Presentation Award went to Mr. Akin Osuntoki, Richardson Oil & Gas Limited, for his presentation on Local Content Development – Closing Opportunity Gaps as part of the Local Content Session on Wednesday 25th January. The Best Technical Presentation Award came from the Subsea Technology session on Tuesday 24th January, and was awarded to Mr. Brian Ennever of Paladon Systems, for his presentation of Autonomous Shutdown Valve for Subsea PLEM Valves.

The Award for Young Engineer went to Mr. Unwana Bassey of Total E&P Nigeria for the presentation entitled Deepwater Intelligent Well Completion: Case Study of an Installation Failure in Usan Project, which was part of the Well Construction & Drilling Operations session which took place on Wednesday 25th January.

The 2012 Conference, under the title of “Deepwater Technologies for West Africa”, began with the Opening Plenary Session, with contributions from Mr. David Paganie, Chief Editor, Offshore magazine; Engr. Francis Alabo Ogaree, General Manager, International Venture Operations, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and Dr. Sammy J. Ojigbo, General Manager Operations, NNPC Oil Field Operations. Further dignitaries were invited to join the stage including Dr. Kingsley Ojoh PHD, Corporate GSR and Business Executive Director, Total E&P Nigeria Limited, and Chief Franklin Dandison Nengia of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

Engr. Francis Alabo Ogaree, General Manager, International Venture Operations, Nigerian NatIonal Petroleum Corporation, and Chairman of the Offshore West Africa 2012 Advisory Board, provided a presentation on the technical challenges of deepwater development and the status of the regulatory environment in Nigeria. Engr. Ogaree also discussed the importance of Offshore West Africa to the industry.

Also, as part of the Opening Plenary Session, Engr. Francis Alabo Ogaree was presented with the Offshore West Africa 2012 Advisory Board Chairman Award by Mr. David Paganie, whilst Total were awarded an Offshore magazine Top 5 Project of 2011, which was accepted on behalf of Total by Dr. Kingsley Ojoh.

Following on from the Opening Plenary was the Operators’ Perspective including contributions from Total E&P Nigeria, and Shell Nigeria Exploration & Production Company Limited. The exhibition floor was officially opened after the completion of the Opening Plenary Session, and offered a vast range of services and equipment, full of industry experts and renowned organisations, institutions and associations.

Offshore West Africa 2012 provided an excellent venue for face-to-face business in the West African region, with the event providing industry professionals the chance to establish new business contacts and see the latest products and developments. Over the three days of the conference, a range of topics were discussed, including:

• Subsea Technology
• Geosciences
• Flowlines & Pipelines
• Field Development
• Well Construction/Drilling Operations
• Local Content
 
Offshore West Africa has gained tremendous support from the leading authorities and organizations in West Africa including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, ABS, Modec, SNEPCo, Halliburton, ExxonMobil and Total.

Offshore West Africa will return in to Accra, Ghana at the International Conference Centre, on 19-21 March 2013, where leading industry professionals will once again converge for the premier oil and gas conference and exhibition dedicated to the West African region.

The Advisory Board for Offshore West Africa is now accepting abstracts for the Offshore West Africa 2013 Conference. We invite you to submit an abstract for Offshore West Africa 2013 and share your knowledge, experience and solutions with industry colleagues from around the world.
